From the rise of cubicles in the 1960s to the open office space design plans that dominated the late 2010s and early 2020s, there have been significant office design trends that have shifted in and out of popularity over the years. 2025 will be a year that’s laser focused on creating commercial environments that reflect brand values, prioritize employee wellness and comfort, and–of course–boost employee collaboration and productivity.
Here’s what we’re expecting to see most.
Resimercial Aesthetics
Resimercial design – a blend of residential and commercial aesthetics – focuses on bringing the warmth of home into the workplace. We saw it spike in popularity in the immediate wake of the pandemic, and in 2025, it’s only going to get more popular. This is especially true because companies are working hard to entice employees back to the office, and creating a comfier and homier aesthetic in the office is a great way to make that happen. Now, resimercial aesthetics and design can look different depending on the designer you work with as well as the vision you’re trying to execute, but there are a few similarities across the board: soft seating, warm color palettes, and cozy, approachable décor. As a rule of thumb, we like to add rugs, throw pillows, and soft lighting to create a more relaxed, homey feel for our clients’ workplaces.
Social Spaces
Social hubs will play an essential role in fostering collaboration and connection in 2025. Community zones, like coffee bars, lounge areas, and informal meeting spaces, encourage spontaneous interactions that can spark creativity and strengthen team bonds. As companies focus on cultivating a sense of belonging, these communal areas inherently help nurture relationships within the team.
Hybrid Meeting Spaces
Now, just because employers are trying to usher people back into the office doesn’t mean that hybrid work schedules are going anywhere. To help businesses maintain optimal productivity, it’s important to design spaces that are primed for virtual and in-person collaboration. Hybrid meeting spaces are rooms that are specifically equipped with the latest AV technology, flexible seating, and interactive whiteboards—all of which allow seamless interactions between remote and on-site employees.
Adaptive Layouts
Gone are the days of fixed office layouts. The modern workspace is evolving into a flexible landscape that can be reshaped to support different tasks, team sizes, and collaboration styles. Adaptable layouts allow workspaces to pivot easily between focused work, team collaborations, and client meetings. Modular furniture—think movable desks, lightweight dividers, and adjustable seating—will play a starring role in 2025’s flexible office setups.
Quiet Spaces and Acoustic Solutions
Open floor plan office spaces are still incredibly popular, and we don’t see that changing in 2025. One flaw of open layout offices is the lack of privacy and focus areas for employees who need quiet environments to best complete their work. Luckily, commercial interior designers have been quick to come up with design solutions to combat this weak spot so their clients can still reap the benefits of open floor plans while providing employees with the quiet spaces they need: quiet spaces and acoustic solutions. These designated quiet zones or soundproof pods will offer employees places to focus, hold private calls, or recharge without distraction, promoting both productivity and comfort.
Health Focused Amenities
Employee wellness has emerged as a critical priority in office spaces over the last few years, and it will continue to be one in 2025. Ergonomic furniture, standing desks, on-site wellness rooms, and outdoor seating spaces are all becoming staples in modern offices. Expect to see air purification systems and hydration stations that support employee health, as well as dedicated spaces for relaxation or exercise. Creating a workspace that cares for its employees’ physical and mental health builds a foundation for a happy, motivated team.
